316 stainless steel is a commonly used austenitic stainless steel belonging to the 300 series (with chromium and nickel as the main alloying elements). By adding molybdenum (Mo, approximately 2-3%) and adjusting its composition, it significantly enhances corrosion resistance and high-temperature performance compared to the basic 304 stainless steel. It is widely used in industries such as chemical engineering, marine engineering, food and medical, and energy. The following analyzes its characteristics from multiple dimensions:

I. Corrosion Resistance

Core Advantages:

 

• Strong resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion: The addition of molybdenum effectively improves the steel's resistance to pitting corrosion in chloride-ion-containing environments (such as seawater, salt solutions, and acidic conditions), making it more suitable for humid, high-salt, or highly corrosive scenarios (e.g., marine equipment, chemical reaction vessels).
• Excellent acid corrosion resistance: It exhibits better tolerance to organic acids (such as sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and acetic acid) and some inorganic acids than 304 stainless steel, making it suitable for acid liquid transportation or storage equipment in the chemical industry.
• Good intergranular corrosion resistance: By controlling the carbon content (typically ≤0.08%, with the extra-low carbon version 316L having ≤0.03% carbon), it reduces the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries, minimizing the risk of intergranular corrosion. This makes it suitable for welded components or parts operating at high temperatures (450-850°C) for extended periods.

• II. Mechanical Properties

• Balance of Strength and Toughness:
  • At room temperature: Tensile strength ≥515 MPa, yield strength ≥205 MPa, elongation ≥40%, hardness ≤200 HB, combining good strength and processing plasticity.
  • At high temperatures: It maintains high creep strength and oxidation resistance at 500-600°C, suitable for high-temperature equipment such as boilers and heat exchangers (short-term use temperature up to 800°C, long-term use recommended ≤650°C).
• Workability:
  • Can be formed through cold working (e.g., stamping, bending), but has a slightly higher work hardening tendency than 304, requiring attention to stress relief during processing.
  • Good weldability, recommended to use matching 316 or 316L electrodes to avoid corrosion issues in the weld heat-affected zone.

• III. Physical Properties

• Density: Approximately 7.98 g/cm³, similar to 304 stainless steel.
• Coefficient of thermal expansion: Approximately  (20-100°C), slightly higher than carbon steel, requiring attention to thermal deformation in high-temperature environments.
• Thermal conductivity: Approximately 15 W/(m·K), poor thermal conductivity with lower heat dissipation efficiency than carbon steel, suitable for thermal insulation scenarios.
• Magnetism: Austenitic structure is typically non-magnetic, but cold working may produce a small amount of martensitic transformation, leading to slight magnetism (can be eliminated by solution treatment).

• IV. Surface Treatment and Aesthetics

• Can be surface-treated through processes such as polishing, brushing, and electroplating to achieve mirror, matte, and other effects, combining corrosion resistance with aesthetics. Commonly used in food equipment, medical devices, and decorative engineering.
